Northumberland wildlife is right on the doorstep from a self catering cottage, house or apartment from Stay Northumbria
Probably the most famous and much loved bird on this North Northumberland coast is the little Puffin - that’s little in stature, massive in character and in numbers with over 70,000 of them visiting the nearby Farne Islands each year from May to end of July. (that's why we chose him for our logo).
Various trips can be arranged by visiting the prettily painted booking cabins situated in the Harbour at Seahouses.
Trips vary from 1½ hour sail arounds to all day landings, on some trips you can even take your dog. Inner Farne is the largest of the Farne Islands and along with Staple Island is a major sanctuary in the UK for breeding sea birds. During the nesting season there are over 20 different species at the islands including Guillemots, Razorbills, Eiderducks, Terns and of course the inimitable Puffins.
Terns also nest on the dunes between Beadnell and Newton by the Sea, a hide is available here but note that dogs are not allowed on this area of beach during the nesting season. Waders and over-wintering wild fowl can be seen on the ponds at Monks Haven, Budle Bay and Ross Sands.
Wander the back lanes towards Fleetham and Elford and you’re bound to see greenfinch and yellowhammer, and between Elford and Westfield a Barn Owl regularly flies at dusk. There are Herons fishing on the beach in Beadnell regularly and a number of Hawk species hunt the hedgerows and roadsides. There are two bird hides which can be use by members of the public free of charge at West Fleetham ponds and swans often frequent the ponds at Coldrife. Up at Beal, enroute to Lindisfarne the Falconry Centre at The Barn at Beal provides an opportunity to get up close and personal with a number of falcon and hawk species in addition to familiarising yourself with Land Management displays.
Guided birdwatching walks can be arranged with Birdwatch Northumbria. Tel: 01670 783451 - www.birdwatchnorthumbria.com With its endless and dramatic coastline, the North East Coast has wildlife in abundance, including grey seals, waders, overwintering wild fowl and summer seabird colonies
Varied landscapes provide for a wide range of wildlife.
Much of the coast is owned and managed by conservation organisations and has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, one of only 37 such areas in the UK.
The whole shore-line of North Northumberland is also designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
In the surrounding countryside there is an abundance of wildlife. Inland, foxes are frequently seen as are badgers which you may catch a glimpse of if you walk the lanes in the early evening, here too you may see Roe Deer grazing in nearby fields and Stoats and Weasels run the gambit of vehicles as the scurry across the road.
On the beaches the abundant rock pools enable you to find all sorts of pool life, small crabs, anenomes, shrimp etc. In Seahouses please watch out on the main roads for the resident mallards - they even have their own traffic signs to help protect them when wandering the roads with duckling in spring. And of course in and around Seahouses harbour you will find the resident flocks of Eider ducks, distinctive by their black and white plumage and known locally as “Cuddy’s ducks” they were a favourite of St. Cuthbert when he resided on the islands.
There are often guided walks and visits please watch our events pages for details, or a full list is normally available from AONB or Seahouses Tourist Information Centre 01665 720884.
