"We would not hesitate to return here for another relaxing week in beautiful surroundings, it is one of the nicest places we have stayed in in the UK and excellent value for money - thank you Chris and Elizabeth for making our week away such a marvellous one!"

The Byre @ Warkworth is a newly converted dairy, set in its own enclosed garden in the grounds of the owners house. The property has been in the family's ownership for over a 100 years.
Birling is approx 1 mile from the centre of Warkworth, a pretty village dominated by its wonderful castle, its main street with indpendent retailers, shops, pubs and eateries, a beautiful church and stone bridge over the river, along which is a dog friendly riverside walk.

The owners have used locally sourced materials to incorporate during the property's renovation so it offers many original features like beams, flagstones etc., an eclectic mix of traditional style furnishings and vintage and modern items throughout.

Large expanse of wide opening glass doors lead from the enclosed private courtyard as an entrance into the open plan lounge dining kitchen. The patio is lushly planted and this area makes for a lovely seating area to enjoy the outside space for an alfresco breakfast or sundowners in the evening. Access to enclosed garden with treehouse.

The Byre is part of Birling North Cottage, Warkworth, home to the Howliston family since 1874. The Byre was the cow shed, dairy and hay loft, now converted to a high standard creating a comfortable and atmospheric holiday retreat.

We are Chris and Elizabeth Howliston, and we moved into the family home fifteen years ago beginning work on the main house immediately but we always dreamt of converting the cow shed into additional accommodation. Peeling back years of Howliston occupation was an emotional experience but we always intended to preserve the exterior character of the building and to use as many original features as practicable.

The Byre has its own personality and retains huge character with its large king post trusses and beams. Our conversion retained the exterior wooden structure however Inside we have tried to combine modern comfort and convenience. We hope we have achieved a respectful appreciation of the past including references to seafaring and farming life.

We were not prepared for how peaceful a character the Byre would retain. There is an amazing sense of calm and cosiness which pleases us and hopefully our visitors. We involved one of our friends and Architect Steena Steward who saw us through the rigors of plan preparation and planning application. We have enjoyed putting together the ideas for the internal design and décor ourselves to ensure the Byre is personal, tasteful and interesting. We have created a patio garden with seating area for alfresco breakfasts and suppers.

We believe we offer something a little bit different. The Byre is romantic; it has its own particular charm. We like to imagine the cows tied to the wall waiting for milking, the ships lights shining in their alcoves, a safe haven for our guests. The artwork we have chosen speaks of a close relationship with land and sea. We like to think of the Byre as a base from which to fall in love with North Northumberland. It is a bolt hole, a place to play, relax and rest. We want our guests to feel completely at home.

So Elizabeth and Chris, what are your favourite things to see and do, and what do you like to recommend to your guests :

Our favourite walk, A stroll along the river which runs to the rear of the Castle and watching the little ferry taking people to The Hermitage.

Our favourite afternoon tea spot We like nothing better than walking down into Warkworth and having a spot of lunch or afternoon tea at Bertram's and make sure our guests are introduced to this amazing café and restaurant.

Our favourite beach - The road to the rear of the property leads directly to Warkworth beach which is also a favourite walk of ours and takes ten minutes to this lovely sandy stretch which is great to walk on or take the children for the typical afternoon on the sand making castles and chasing waves.

Our favourite restaurant - We urge our guests to explore Amble particularly seafood lovers. We always recommend the Fish shack and Old Boat House restaurants with their spectacular views over the harbour.

Our favourite shopping experience - We have some lovely shops right here on our doorstep in Warkworth - so a bit spoilt for choice - Greys, The Greenhouse and the Fenwick Gallery are great places to browse and buy.

Our favourite attraction : The Hermitage at Warkworth and we always make sure our guests know about Alnwick and Howick gardens both with their individual characters.

Our favourite view - Its got to be the view of the Castle looking back up river from Amble - you can see this view in the photo gallery.

Our favourite touristy thing to do - We recommend a castle tour and a visit to Holy Island.

If there was one thing you'd advise a visitor to do whilst staying here what would it be? We make sure our guests know about the lovely walks they can do from the Byre, and further afield, and that they can walk or cycle the spectacular coastline north and south, as we sit directly on the cycle route from Newcastle to Edinburgh.

Situated on the outskirts of the pretty riverside village of Warkworth, approx half a mile from the centre, with its pubs and restaurants, close to the riverside walk, and the historic "hermitage" accessible only by row boat.

Ideal for Castle, village amenities, and just 3 miles from the town of Amble to the South, for shops, small supermarkets, more pubs and restaurants.

Excellent area for walking, beaches etc and just a short drive to the town of Alnwick with its castle, and the North Northumberland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

" The Byre is a lovely property, full of character. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Our short break at The Byre was very enjoyable and the owners Chris and Elizabeth were the perfect hosts.
