The Locality:
Situated adjacent to the owners’ property, the cottage is set in an area which is a walkers’ and wildlife enthusiasts’ paradise. Straight out of the front door and you can roam the “open access” land all around the cottage – and what a variety of terrain, from pasture, riverside and moorland, through woods where you’ll come across trickling rivulets and waterfalls and up onto the hill tops to stunning vistas and archeological sites. Close by, you can wander to the 17th century bastle-house, one of the best examples in Northumberland, and slightly further afield (2 or so miles), you’ll find the nature walks and medieval well at Holystone. Closer to “home” you are welcome to explore the owners’ field opposite the cottage, where there’s a good chance of seeing red squirrels at the special feeders. There are also nesting boxes for a wide variety of bird-life including owls, and you may see plenty of raptors and moorland/ woodland birds, including woodpeckers that regularly visit the bird table outside the living room window. The botanist will be happy here too, the woodland floor is a carpet of bluebells in season, followed by beautiful rhododendrons, the moorland heathers, brackens and ferns, and autumn and winter bring the wonderful array of colour and edible offerings of the tree and hedgerow. If you know what to look for, this is a forager’s larder. The property is well situated to explore the wider aspects of Northumberland: it is just 30 minutes drive to the market town of Alnwick with its Castle and world renowned Garden, 45 minutes to the Sea and some glorious beaches. An hour or so, will have you striding away along Hadrian’s Wall, or visiting the border towns of Berwick, Jedburgh or Hawick. The cottage is situated on the main Cycle Route 68, which in fact goes right past the door, and there is secure storage for cycles for those seeking a more leisurely route to explore the local area.
