This attractive first floor accommodation, a former coachman's quarters, adjoins a beautiful Grade II listed stone pele tower and house dating back to 1380. The village is near both the historic town of Alnwick (3 miles) with its famous gardens and magnificent castle and the fabulous coast of Northumberland. The nearest beach is 2.5 miles away. Holiday makers have full use of the owner's stunning secluded garden with patio area, lawns and flower beds set in 1 acre of land. Shilbottle is ideally situated, only 1 mile from the A1, for visiting all parts of this historic region including the coast, the Cheviot Hills, the Borders and Hadrian's Wall. Nearby Alnmouth railway station makes visiting Edinburgh or Newcastle for the day an easy option. Coastal golf courses, river/sea angling and horse riding all nearby. Watercolour painting workshops available in the garden studio of the artist owner by arrangement in advance. There is a shop, pub, cafe and restaurant all within walking distance of the property.

Duvets & pillows provided - Bed linen hire available payable to owner on arrival @ £5 per person per week - No Towels provided. Sorry no cot or highchair. Please let us know if you require bed linen prior to your visit.

Our self catering flat is on the first floor of the west end of a grade II listed building

The nearest bus stop is 130 metres away to the left of the property

The nearest train station is Alnmouth (2 miles)


Arrival and car parking facilities

Car parking is directly in front of the holiday accommodation access between two wrought iron gates

Alternative parking is in the small private car park opposite the health and leisure club 50 metres from the property.

Parking is immediately in front of the property to the left or right of the drive. Drivers will need to reverse out of the drive, but easier alternative parking is 50 metres away opposite the health and leisure club. The entrance to that car park is to the right of Pilgrims Rest.

Accessing the property car park is down a tarmac road with a gentle incline and then a gentle slope upwards on gravel through the metal gates and between the property and a stone wall – approx. 2 metres wide. The entrance to the property is 3 metres to the gate entrance from the road and then 14 metres from the gate to the entrance on the left hand side of the drive.

The vestibule area

The vestibule area has 6 coat hooks on the right and a notice board with information about the surrounding area. The entrance area is 92cm x 1m55cm. There is a narrow accessible space to the side of the stair rail which accommodates walking sticks, fishing nets and ironing board.

The staircase is to the left of the door. There is a short stair rail to the right. After one step up there is a turn to the right via 4 more steps, then there are 6 steps to the accommodation (13 in total).

Landing area

At the top of the stairs is the landing area, ahead is a small hanging area, to the right are the two bedrooms and the bathroom and to the left is the large open plan lounge kitchen and dining area. The area is 75cm wide and there is a protruding chimney breast on the left. The hanging space is opposite the stairs to the left under the eave and is 1m3cm at its highest point, 90cm deep and 80cm wide. The distance from the top of the stairs to the bathroom is 1m10cm, to the first bedroom is 80cm and to the second bedroom is 1m70cm – all to the right. To the lounge on the left is 1m40cm and to the hanging space ahead and slightly to the left is 1m40cm. There is a wall mounted fire extinguisher in the area to the left and a fire alarm set on the beam above the fire extinguisher.


Bedroom 1 (Double)

The double bedroom on the right and on entry has an area of 1m50cm x 1m80cm, then to the side of which has hanging space and a chest of drawers under the eve. This is directly opposite the doorway. It has another area reached through a beamed archway (this is to the left of the doorway). The archway is 1m15cm wide. Through this and to the right is a double bed – standard size. The bed is placed on the opposite side of the entrance doorway wall. Around the two sides of the bed are 60cm wide and the bottom of the bed is a width of 38cm. There are four pillows – two feather and two manmade. The duvet is manmade. There are two bedside lamps on either side of the bed on glass round topped material skirted tables, directly under the eaves, on either side of the dormer window. When provision of bed linen is requested it is made of cotton. There is a latch door handle. There is a hanging rail under the eave directly ahead to the left side of the chest of drawers.


Bedroom 2 (Twin)

This bedroom has two single beds. One is to the left of the doorway and the other is directly opposite the doorway. The clear area upon entry to this room is 2m20cm from the doorway to the bed opposite and 1m40cm between the bed to the side of the door. To the right is a chest of drawers. The bed to the left of the doorway has a bedside table between it and the doorway. Each bed has two manmade pillows and manmade duvets. There are bedside lamps on one side of each bed. When bed linen is requested it is made of cotton. There is a latch door handle.



Bath immediately to the right, under the roof of the eave, wash basin to the left and WC to the right of that, under the eave. Open floor area – head height by door is 2m but slants at a 45-degree angle under the eaves. The toilet seat is 42cm high. There is an overhead shower directly over the bath next to the door. The door handle is a latch and locked via simple bolt.


The stairs, bedrooms, bathroom and landing area are carpeted.


Open plan lounge/dining and kitchen area

Entrance to the open plan lounge, dining and kitchen area through a stone and beamed archway and reached via two steps down to open floor wooded area. Two light switches to the right.


To the right of the entrance. L shaped floor units. Gas hob with four burners, opposite the doorway. The electric ignition for this is the black plug on the wall on the right and should be left switched on. To the right of the hob there is a sink with drainer and two taps. To the right directly next to the sink is a microwave and underneath this under the work surface is a fridge and small freezer compartment. There are two spotlights on the beam over the kitchen work areas. There is a fire blanket to the right of the archway, facing the room.

Dining area

To the left of the archway. Table with four chairs. The table is trestle style with two supports at each side and a single bar joining them.

Lounge area

At the far end opposite the entrance. There are two leather sofas in the lounge area with side tables. There is a central light with 5 bulbs and 3 table lamps – 2 in the lounge and 1 in the dining area. An electric natural flame is on the wall opposite the entrance and the temp switch is at the base behind the glazed door. A TV with remote control is to the left of the stove next to the window. On the windowsill there is a quantity of tourist information. The open plan area has two velux windows in the sloping roof. There are two main beams and a number of connecting beams.


The garden

The garden is accessed through the single black door to the far left of the property. The door is 80cm wide and 2m27cm height. There is a key on the property key ring for a padlock. Light switch to the right of the doorway if needed. Opposite the entrance is 4m to another door with a key to the left on a hook and up 3 stone steps. There are a little uneven.

The door is 1m74cm high and 80cm wide.

There is a grassed area through the small wooden gate and to the right is a flag stone patio area with a cast iron table and 5 chairs. There is a small BBQ for the use of guests. There is another large grass area with vegetable patch, fruit trees, gravel paths and greenhouse. A pond is to the right in the area by the owner’s conservatory and we would ask children not use this area without parental supervision. The pond is netted.
