Description

Originally converted from a traditional grain store, this cute cottage was owned by a local stone mason (hence the name), and in its time has been home to fisher folk, and local residents. Recently, owners Louise and Jim have lovingly created a bright and airy 2 bedroom holiday cottage sleeping 4, with all that you'll need to use as a base from which to explore the area, and although the cottage has TV and DVD we bet you spend most of your time watching the to-ings and fro-ings of harbour life. They've even created a great vantage point in the master bedroom with this purpose in mind. This property welcomes non-smokers. Dog Welcome. Wi-fi

Reviews

Lovely place to stay. Th attention to detail was lovely. The owner had left tea, coffee, sugar, washing up liquid, loo roll and all the little things that you always forget to take yourself which meant we did not have to race out and find a shop to buy these ourselves. Beautiful cottage, very comfy beds and lots of helpful information in a folder in the premises. We would be happy to recommend this cottage and Stay Northumberland to our friends and family.

Mrs Sarah H,

A great little cottage in a super location right on the harbour. Clean, well equipped and well presented; the only things that are worth mentioning are that the stairs are very steep so not ideal for any with reduced mobility, the utility could do with a few more (robust) coat hooks and the kitchen is rather small (only one person at a time really) so don't go planning on cooking any gourmet masterpieces. That said, the kitchen has everything that you need and there is the bonus of a dishwasher and a washing machine. On demand, unlimited hot water was great too. Worked really well for our family of 4 including 2 teenagers.

Past Customer,

Super little cottage which was exactly as described. Great position. Handy for the boats to the Farne Islands and an easy walk into town and to be able to watch the goings-on in the harbour was lovely. We were very lucky with the weather in early May and were able to sit on the balcony for breakfast. The only addition I would make would be to have at least one small coffee table in the lounge. We used the dining chairs as somewhere to put our coffee mugs but these had a slightly sloping seat and would in no way be appropriate for a family with young children or animals. As I have often found with holiday rental properties it is in the finer details that things seem to get forgotten. The rug in the lounge was absolutely full of sand when I shook it out. The freezer needed to be defrosted and the wash powder/liquid dispenser in the washing machine was black and mouldy beyond where it could be seen on opening. However, these are relatively minor points which would in no way prevent me from staying at this property in the future.

Past Customer,

Location

Only yards to the harbour's edge, so you can while away the hours watching the toings and froings of harbour life, or stretch your legs on the beautiful beaches which run North and South and are ideal for leisurely walks, or for those more adventurous try the 6 mile return beach walk to Bamburgh, or the 14 mile return journey to Newton by the Sea (great pub awaits for the mid walk break).
The cottage is close to all the village amenities - shops, butchers, bakers (no candlestick maker tho), pubs & restaurants, newsagents, petrol station, library, resource centre for internet access, takeaways, and on the harbour where you can leave on excursions to visit the Farne Islands, to see Puffins (May, June & July), Grey Seals and many other species of birds. The area is popular with birdwatchers and photographers.
Just 2.5 miles up the coast by road is Bamburgh and its wonderful castle on a rocky outcrop overlooking the beach, and 15 miles south you'll find Alnwick Castle and Garden a popular spot for those with green fingers, and Harry Potter fans (the castle was Hogwarts and the site of the quiddich pitch in the 1st two films).
