North Pennines Cottages

The North Pennines is considered by many as one of England’s most special places due to its unspoilt landscape of open heather moors and peatlands, beautiful dales and wild meadows, clear flowing rivers, tumbling waterfalls and attractive woodlands not to mention the array of wildlife.

This unique area has been recognised as the second largest designated Area of Outstanding Beauty (AONB) in England and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). It has also become Britain’s first UNESCO European and Global Geopark.

Reconnect with the outdoors and experience first-hand the beauty of this area by exploring the North Pennines on foot or by bike. There are many walking and cycle trails available in this area which will allow you to enjoy some of the most scenic areas.

The North Pennines has some of the best dark skies in the UK giving you great opportunities to stargaze as night falls (don’t forget to bring a set of binoculars on your holiday).

Enjoy great days out at one many top attractions including the ‘biggest’ High Force Waterfall at Forest-in-Teesdale on the River Tees.  Recognised as of the most spectacular waterfalls in the UK, High Force is reached via a short woodland walk, following the sound of the cascading water until you reach the viewing area at the base of the waterfall.

Other attractions include Raby Castle and Gardens, Hamsterley Forest, Derwent Reservoir and Kilhope – an award winning 19th century mining museum – interactive fun for all the family. In the warmer months you can also enjoy a day at the Weardale open air swimming pool – a unique and enjoyable swimming experience and a perfect cool down on hot summer days.

The Bowes Museum is an iconic museum set in the historic market town of Barnard Castle. It has a renowned collection of art, fashion and design and beautiful grounds to explore outdoors including an adventure playground.

To experience complete escapism, surrounded by stunning countryside with uninterrupted view for miles, the North Pennines is the perfect holiday retreat for you and your loved ones.
