What makes us just that little bit different from most other holiday cottage agencies is that we actually started our business by letting out our own cottage. We were one of those owners, maybe you can identify with, who had a busy and successful business (in Newcastle), were running around 9-5 and often much longer hours, servicing our “day job” customers and making sure things were “just so” for them.
When we could, on a Friday night, we’d race up to Seahouses to our holiday cottage bolt hole to unwind - walk the dogs on the beach, meet for a drink in the pub or go for a meal with friends, and generally chill out before racing back to the city to start the viscous cycle again on Monday.
Then, we didn’t have time to do all the nice things we’d envisaged doing for the paying guests visiting our cottage when we weren’t using it . We didn’t know anything other than to use one of the well known national letting agencies to handle it all for us, who its fair to say took the hassle and admin out of the equation for us and that was it.
But, as we found out the hard way, there are limits to what a remote telesales operator can tell a guest about your property, there’s limited knowledge when your guest wants to know what time the last train is from who knows where, and has this property got wi-fi , SKY or a cafetiere, and what type of cake is in the welcome pack?
We’ve grown our business organically since then and over the last 20+ years, purchasing or building a number of purpose built holiday properties ourselves, so we know them inside out and upside down, what works and what doesn’t for guests. We employ local staff who, if not born here, have lived in the area for a considerable time and love it just like we do.
When friends and acquaintances started asking us to look after their holiday properties we decided to do it
just the way that we would have liked those national agents to have done it for us when we started out - with knowlegable staff, who know their stuff. With enthusiasm about marketing the product and the area in equal quantities. With a can do attitude and willingness to go that extra mile to make sure our guests step through the door of a property that is just the right match for them.
That’s to say we hand pick our properties, they aren’t all Tourist Board star rated properties ‘tho it does help, but they have to fit in with our ethos : Excellent locations, quality, cleanliness, easy to use and live in, and preferably have a unique feature that sets them apart from the other properties in our portfolio.
So on our website, you won’t find half a dozen houses on the same housing estate, you won’t find cottages refurbished with shoddy workmanship and kitted out from a DIY “shed”.
But you will find cottages that reflect the taste of the family who owns them. You will find some that take dogs and some that don’t, you will find cottages that are handy for everything and you will equally find cottages that are remote and a challenge to get to.
There are many with stunning views, beach access or acres of land, but we equally have cosy cottages with quaint courtyard gardens with beautiful planting, butterflies and bees. We have cottages that have all the mod-cons you can think of and we have cottages that are back to basics, but they all have one thing in common - we’d stay in them ourselves and we have no hesitation in recommending them to our guests.
